Virus Treatment Update

I know I have talked about some of these antiviral strategies before but some things just bear repetition.

After doing some reading, turns out that quite a bit about COVID-19 was known in January of 2020. Sure we didn't get a lot of information here in the US from usual news sources until March when it was obvious that this virus was not going to respect national boundaries or political parties and wouldn't be silenced by rhetoric.

One killer in the COVID-19 syndrome is a common one for viral infections, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is characterized by acute inflammation, microvascular damage and/or increased pulmonary vascular and epithelial permeability.

ARDS has been with us for centuries and medicine continues to work on treatments without much success. Fortunately for us, we do have resources available to mitigate the early effects of the physiological changes that can lead to ARDS if left unchecked.

One notable effect of ARDS is acidosis of the blood. This is easily treatable with IV sodium bicarbonate if one is already in the ICU. But why wait until you are in a crisis to begin adding treatment to keep the blood pH at a healthy 7.4. As a side note, one way the body works to keep the pH high is by removing CO2 from the blood via the lungs. If the lungs can't do their job effectively due to impending ARDS, more CO2 remains in the blood and the pH continues to drop causing a trend toward unhealthy acidosis.

The following is a list of things to keep in your anti-viral arsenal with some recommended dosages. When in doubt, start out small and work up. Be sure to work toward the recommended therapeutic dosages as you will often need some large doses of natural products to get the desired effects.

Magnesium chloride

Magnesium chloride has some unique qualities only found in this particular form of magnesium. You will make up a solution of 25g of MgCl2-6H2O in 1 liter or water (2.5%). In acute diseases the dose is administered every 6 hours (every 3 hours for the first two doses if the case is serious); then space every 8 hours and then 12 hours as improvement goes on. After recovery it's better going on with a dose every 12 hours for several days. One possible source is

CardioVascular Research: Magnesium Solution

Adults and children over 5 years of age-125 cc (about ½ cup). For infants, the dose will be between 15cc and 100 cc depending on age and weight factors.

Sodium Bicarbonate

Your dosage will depend on your urine pH. You can get some pH test strips are your local pharmacy or from us at OVitaminPro.com. Your first morning urine pH should be neutral (7.0) or slightly acidic (maybe 6.8) that will translate to a 7.4 blood pH. Maximum dosage is seven and a half teaspoons of powdered sodium bicarbonate a day for a full-grown adult under 60 and three and a half teaspoons for adults over 60. That is a lot of soda bicarb! Check your urine pH every morning and modify your daily dosage up and down accordingly. You can get Arm & Hammer or 360 or other brand Bicarbonate of Soda in the grocery store.

As a starting point, during the first day take six doses of half teaspoonful of in glass of cool water, at about two-hour intervals. During the second day take four doses of half teaspoonful of in glass of cool water, at the same intervals. The third day take two doses of half teaspoonful in glass of cool water morning and evening, and thereafter half teaspoonful in glass of cool water each morning until cold or viral infection is over (10 days?). Again be sure to monitor your first a.m. urine pH to regulate the dose.

Iodine

Iodine is a potent antibiotic. It appears that only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa.

Low levels of iodine are often associated with low thyroid function and impaired thyroid function is often associated with diminished immune health.

EuroMedica: Tri-Iodine

Dosage recommendations are often contradictory so I will try to keep this simple. Try 200-300 mg per day for most cases. For more difficult infections, you might use 300-900 mg/day. In the past doctors have used up to 6 g (6,000 mg) per day for problems like syphilis, difficult skin lesions and even chronic lung diseases. I am reporting these higher dosages for historical reference only as you would do well to work with a knowledgeable health care provider if you want to go down that path.

Some doctors say that you shouldn't use dietary iodine if you have autoimmune thyroid problems but I don't think a blanket statement like that can be valid. For some iodine will be perfectly OK and for others it could be a problem so be sure to monitor your own response to decide if this is for you. If you have autoimmune thyroid issues, you might do just fine skipping this step and focus more on magnesium, sodium bicarb, vitamin C etc.

A couple of good options for an iodine source are:

AllVia: Liquid Iodine Plus

NuMedica: Thyroxodine

EuroMedica: Tri-Iodine

Vitamin C

Much has been written about vitamin C and viruses. Please refer to our blog at:

Vitamin C and Covid Blog

You will want to begin taking vitamin C as soon as possible after noticing any symptoms. Start with 3-5 g in one dose followed by 1 gram every 30-60 minutes for the next three hours. Repeat this cycle until symptoms subside. Again see the above link for more details.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has also been discussed in the above link. Most people we test need between 5,000 and 10,000 IUs of vitamin D per day to keep levels at an optimum level. For acute viral infections you may need an extra 30,000 – 50,000 IU dose once a week for a couple of weeks in our experience. I am talking home care here. For people in the hospital with severe lung compromise, dosages as high as 540,000 IUs have been used. Also some studies have suggested 50,000 to 100,000 IUs per day for 5 days without cause for alarm. So those home care doses are not high and not dangerous.

An excellent choice is

Pure Encapsulations Vitamin D3-5000 from OvitaminPro.com. It also comes in 10,000 IUs per cap.

Glutathione

This is the one compound that most people don't hear about. The liver has two general pathways to get rid of toxins, phase I and phase II pathways. Glutathione is a major player in the phase II pathways to help make toxins water soluble so they can be excreted from the body. Glutathione is not easily supplemented but can be supported by taking N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and according to some studies alpha lipoic acid (ALA). Since glutathione is so important we take NAC and ALA on a daily basis. We also use LifeWave Glutathione Patches that help stimulate your body's natural production of glutathione.

See NuMedica NAC or

BetterGenix NAC

Protocol: Alpha Lipoic Acid.

As a side note, vitamin C is also critical to these liver detox pathways so keeping your levels up as routine will pay off over time.

Hope this summary of supplements and virus resistance will be helpful. Of course you can get some of these nutrients in food but to get a therapeutic dose, supplementation is a lot easier
