Open letter to U.S. Congress

RE: Picamilon and Phenibut

Dear Senators and Representatives:

I am writing on behalf of the millions of people who have difficulty sleeping and rely on safe, naturally sleep-aid supplements like picamilon and phenbut. I will do my best to keep this letter short and as simple as possible even though this is a complex topic.

Picamilon and phenibut were created to help move GABA (a primary inhibitory neurotransmitter) across the blood brain barrier. Both are GABA with the addition of vitamin B3 (picamilon) or a phenyl group (phenibut). GABA itself doesn't cross the blood brain barrier very well but when the vitamin B3 or the phenyl group are added, the new compound easily gets into the brain and then the GABA can do its work more easily.

Picamilon has shown very few if any negative effects even with daily use for long periods. Never-the-less, the FDA banned it for OTC use in 2015.

Phenibut can cause some addiction problems when used in extremely large doses but is still less addictive than smart phones and social media. Large doses have been used by some to fight opioid addictions of various kinds. Large doses should be professionally managed. Phenibut in low doses necessary for anxiety or sleep has been used very successfully and is well tolerated with few or no reported problems.

We have been selling phenibut (NeuroScience Kavinace) and using it ourselves for a couple of decades without problems. I told my sister (a nurse) that the FDA pulled phenibut from the market last month and she was understandably upset and said nobody had better mess with her sleep. She has previously been to several MD's and tried a host of drugs without success before going the natural route. She has successfully slept with help from Kavinace the better part of the last decade.

Banning these GABA compounds is in flagrant disregard for the well-being of these people needing mild, neurotransmitter support.

It would be OK if there were some decent alternative. One important fact that drug companies don't share is that it is not possible to induce a sleep state with a pharmaceutical. Sleep is a natural, healthy state and requires agents that actually improve brain health to produce what a scientist would classify as sleep that is a very specific neurological state.

Picamilon and phenibut increase the level of the inhibitory GABA in the brain helping to naturally calm the brain.

I would like both the Senate and House to put pressure on the FDA to explain these actions that will potentially harm millions. We all know that sleep is not option but a necessity for a healthy brain and a healthy life.

The UK considers picamilon a dietary supplement is readily available.

I would like a reply to this important issue.
