Bone Health Update 2024
About 35 years ago I gave a talk to an elderly group of women about bone health. I discussed diet, calcium, exercise, drug therapies available at the time etc. The question that popped up was, what if a person does all that and still gets osteoporosis?
I worked hard to have an answer to that very good question. In fact one person I knew had worked out her entire adult life, ran marathons, had a really great diet and had osteoporosis in her very early 50s.
She had decided to give the drugs a try. These are not friendly drugs and were famous for causing stomach problems and later on, brittle bones (even with a good DEXA score).
I began to read and read and the first thing we tried was using strontium as a supplement. The body appears to be able to use strontium to rebuild bone better than just calcium. Strontium is one row down from calcium on the periodic table meaning that it has a similar outer electron shell configuration. We used a strontium citrate formula at that time but if you do a search of strontium on OVitaminPro, you will find that most combination bone health products will add some strontium as well as other bone-building factors like vitamin D and complementary minerals.
NuMedica Osteo V SC & Zahler BoneFactor, both linked below.
The BoneFactor formula above includes cofactors like vitamin D, vitamin K2 and a couple of kinds of calcium.
The next DEXA scan for bone density showed a slight increase in bone density. At least we were able to stop the slide with that formula from about 25 years ago.
One conference about that time talked of different nutrition topics with gluten sensitivity also being addressed. I was looking for a solution for my brain decline that I could tell was happening to me, also in my early 50s. I pulled out my notes a couple of months later and began to do my own research on gluten. I spent probably 2-3 hours a day in the scientific literature exploring gluten and decided that I had no choice but to go gluten-free. That changed my brain health in a dramatic way in a short time.
The surprise was finding articles about bone health and gluten sensitivity. Some researchers claimed that according to their findings, every person with bone density issues should also be checked for gluten sensitivity.
The woman I was talking about did get tested and the test came back positive for non-celiac gluten sensitivity. So, on a gluten-free diet she went. A year later showed a nice bone density improvement to osteopenia.
For most women, we come squarely on the side of keeping your estrogen levels at a healthy level. One reason the bones begin to deteriorate is due to low hormone levels. If you are unsure about what you need, you can contact our office, and we can give you some guidance. We have been using Bezwecken products for many years with great results.
I wanted this article to be different than what you will usually find in a search for bone health. Go ahead and read those articles but your answer might lie in the tips listed here like strontium, gluten free diet and hormone support.
Our goal is always to give you useful information and provide you with lifestyle options and quality supplements you can trust. We hope your health improves and you find it beneficial to order your supplements from us at OVitaminPro.com.
